Western Days Parade

They say, "A picture is worth a thousand words." If this is true, this is going to be a long blog post! This Saturday Valley Center celebrated Memorial Day through our annual "Western Days Parade."

We decided to enter a float this year for the first time. I am so thankful for the guys and gals who made this happen. The float was awesome! Our float ended up placing first in the competition. That is great! Yes, I have a competitive spirit!

Anna's Reflections on Ecclesiastes

When I first decided to preach through Ecclesiastes, Anna had some reservations about it as this is not one of her favorite books of the Bible. Apparently, I did okay and she blogged on Ecclesiastes this week. I copied her post bellow!

Ecclesiastes

Gunnar has been preaching through the book of Ecclesiastes over the last couple months at church. Ecclesiastes is not one of my favorite books, but it has been an intersting study and I have enjoyed it a lot more than I expected.

During a lot of his sermons Gunnar has either quoted songs or I have been reminded of a song I know. It seems like I can't turn on the radio any more without being reminded of something from Ecclesiastes. So I compiled the songs and verses that I pulled them from. If you have any other ideas for any of these chapters or verses, please let me know.

Gunnar spoke about how walking with God is in many ways like the line from "Walk the Line." We don't walk with him to try to earn our salvation, but like the sons says "because you're mine, I walk the line". We choose to follow Christ out of our love and reverence and fear for him, not out of compulsion.

Sunset of My Life

This last Sunday I finished preaching through the book of Ecclesiastes. I found this book contains very deep and insightful thoughts from King Solomon. His wise words forced me ponder and contemplate many areas of my life.

From the last chapter I particularly liked this verse:

"Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near when you will say, 'I have no delight in them.'" Ecclesiastes 12:1

I stumbled across some words from Ronald Reagan's speech on November 5, 1994. He said, "I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life."

The cruel reality of life is that on the day we are born we each begin our journey on the sunset of our lives. Death seems so unfair as we approach it and see it take the lives of those we know. David Jeremiah describes death in a chilling way, "Death is a cousin everyone shares and no one has met; we only know he will get around to see everyone sooner or later.”

God has place eternity in each of our hearts (Ecc. 3:11), ultimately causing us to shudder when eternity is cut short in one's life. I do believe God offers hope to us in the midst of our frailty and helplessness. I am so thankful for Jesus who came to give us eternal life through His death, burial, and resurrection (John 3:16, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

As I reflect on my study of Ecclesiastes, I believe the message of the book is to keep God in the forefront of my life in all things today, this day, the day He has given me. In doing so, I will order my life in a manner that is pleasing to God and ultimately providing me with the satisfaction that Mic Jagger is desperately searching for, but failing to find.

I ending my message with the chorus from the song "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash:

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

Our habit is to "walk the line" for God in order to earn favor from God--this is a futile exercise because we simply cannot. But when we realize all that God has done for us in our inability, and we believe in Him for eternal life and become His children through faith.

These words from Johnny Cash are quite good. Because Jesus is mine, I keep a close watch on my heart, I keep my eyes open (because evil is everywhere, Eph. 5:15-16), because Jesus is mine...I walk the line!

Casting Bread!

I have been preaching through the book of Ecclesiastes over the course of the last few months. Solomon, the author, is an immensely deep philosopher. His writing has forced me to think, to ponder, and to contemplate over his subject matter.

Some themes seem to repeat themselves throughout the book. Two in particular come to thought now as I type: 1) Death approaches faster than we would like and 2) enjoy the life God has given you to the fullest.

I have three more Sundays to conclude my teaching on Ecclesiastes and two more chapters. This week opens with a particularly interesting verse:

"Cast your bread upon the waters,for after many days you will find it again", Ecclesiastes 11:1

I have a question for you: When was the last time you cast bread into the water? I bet recently enough to remember there is no hope for retrieving the bread! Soggy bread is useless--unless you're a duck! To the one who cast it there is no return.

My thought this week has been, "Interesting Solomon. Lord what does this mean?"

Then I found myself a Costco. Yes, I know the place for deep spiritual insight! I had my list, bread was needed. I picked up the standard two-loaf combo of sliced bread that we burn through quickly every week. Then I picked up a special loaf of sliced Sourdough bread. My thoughts:

1. Bread and toaster equals delicious!
2. Bread and PB&J equals delicious!
3. Bread and tuna fish equals delicious!
4. Bread and Nutella equals delicious!
5. Bread and casting into water equals waste!

Hmm, I pondered all the way home. At home, I immediately placed one loaf of bread into the freezer and left two loafs out (one Sourdough and one regular). The bread in the freezer is not going bad, the other two are in jeopardy if we don't eat them quickly (which is never a problem in our home)!

Then it dawned on me. "Bread" is our life. It is vanishing quickly. This life we know will soon be gone. I believe Solomon is exhorting us to go for it, to live our lives to the fullest! Seems like such a simple exhortation, but something about age and responsibilities seem to zap our desire to live life to its fullest.

But all too often we freeze our bread so it won't go bad...we minimize the risk of loosing it. We do this with all kinds of stuff. As Christians we should be generous, we should invest in the lives of others. Sometimes it may feel like we are wasting our time, but we need to trust Paul: "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not loose heart." (Gal. 6:9)

The chapter goes on to mention dangers and unknowns that come with life (Ecc. 11:3-6). Sure there are risks! Sure challenges lie ahead! But today you are the youngest you are going to be for the rest of your life, so go for it! Enjoy this day for all that God allows you to! Solomon tells us that our days are sweet (11:7) even when trials come (11:8)!

I simply love the concluding verses of the chapter:

"Be happy, young man, while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment." Ecclesiastes 11:9

Check this out, God wants you live a joyful life. To enjoy life! Live it to the fullest, make the most of your life! But he reminds us, in this pursuit, don't forget there is a holy God that will bring our actions to account. I don't have time to unpack this, but the bottom line is that ultimate joy is found in living your life according to God's ways!

He concludes the section with this amazing thought:

"So then, banish anxiety from your heart and cast off the troubles of your body, for youth and vigor are meaningless." Ecclesiastes 11:10

See the command here? Banish anxiety! Other translations read: Remove sorrow! Refuse to worry! Remove discontent! Remove vexation!

Cast out the bread into the waters! I love that the Bible constantly encourages us to trust in God, enjoy life, family, and friends. God is like the waiter with a fine meal who says, "Enjoy the life I just served you!" Don't fear the unknown, the surprises, but trust in the One who gave you this life.

Father, I confess my worry to you. Lord help me to enjoy this life, each moment that You have given, to the very fullest! Amen.

A Praying Family

One of the greatest joys of fatherhood is watching my young daughter learn to have a relationship with God.

I love to hear Grace sing bits and pieces of hymns and tell me about Bible stories she has read. Anna has devoted almost every morning to reading the Bible and singing songs with Grace. I love watching God's Word bear fruit in our young daughter's life-even at this early age.

Each and every night we pray together as a family-almost without exception. We each take turns praying for various things such as: our family, Grace's salvation, her future husband, our church, our friends who are missionaries, and the like. I love hearing Grace talk to her God. She is only 3, but she is no stranger to prayer. I hope that through this discipline, she will develop into a young lady with a Godward heart.

I truly believe that praying is one of the most intimate things a family can do together. I believe that if married couples and families would pray on a daily basis, we would see a radical reduction of divorce and broken families which is plaguing our nation today.

If you are reading this, I would like to encourage you to pray daily. Married? Pray with your spouse. A parent? Pray with your kids daily. I guarantee that God will mightily use it in your family relationships!
